UCLA or USC-which will better prepare for a career in journalism?
Though I'm only an entering junior in high school, I'm thinking a LOT about my future and what college I should go to. Since I plan on attending college 3,000 miles away from my hometown, I feel like I should be thinking now because I can't just visit these colleges on a weekend trip. My top choices at the moment happen to be USC and UCLA, which might seem sort of cliche, but believe me I've looked around. UCLA is more in my price range, and closer to my family that lives in Los Angeles, however they only offer a "Communications" major, while USC offers an actual "Print Journalism" major. Both are listed in the Fiske guide as top schools for Communications/Journalism. But the slash makes me worry. Which of the two would better prepare me and help me be successful in my aspired profession?
I went to USC. Both are great schools for what you want to do. Keep in mind you'll be paying out of state tuition at UCLA if you're coming from the east coast though -- still, it won't be as expensive as USC. In terms of the actual title of the degree, it won't matter. Either degree from either school will open tons of doors in the profession. USC, speaking from experience, has a great alumni network and many times, you can get hired simply because the person interviewing you went to USC as well and knows its a good school so you have an edge. I'm guessing it probably works like that for UCLA, but I'm not completely sure because it's a public university. You should come out and take a campus tour. That's what I did and I knew right away which one was right for me. You'll just get a feeling about the one you like best. But I wouldn't stress over which degree is better-- either one will be highly respected by any potential employer.
