Wild gardens
The wild garden is best described in reverse: it is not formal in any way, it should not appear to be designed, it should not contain florists' or garden strains of flowers. It may be defined as cultivating hardy species in surroundings which suit them, and enjoying the best effect they can give. It followed as a natural revulsion from the artificiality of Victorian times, when the species of plants grown in shrubberies and flower beds was generally very limited, despite those who tried to catalogue and distribute the many new plants becoming available. In short, the gardeners in Great Britain after having been collectors of ‘simples' and popular flowers, 2 having passed through the Dutch formal era, followed by the park-planting era and the monotony of the late nineteenth century, became collectors again.
Types of wild garden
The wild garden can be nature unadorned but slightly tidied, as may be found on English commons where heather and gorse are offset by slender birch and rugged pine, the whole creating a satisfying picture by means of a little pruning and shaping of the view; or it may be the chalky upland complete with its scabious and knapweed in the turf, supplemented by wild rose, juniper and whitebeam; or in an oak wood, with a small brook adorned by hazel and woodbine, blue- bells and ferns. Such scenes sometimes adjoin country gardens. They lead on to the second type of wild garden produced by embellishing such landscapes with a sympathetic planting of exotics. Chinese birches and pines, tree heaths, and different kinds of broom could be used in the first instance; on the chalk various viburnums, cotoneasters and berberis would blend well with the natives, and Japanese maples, azaleas and rhododendrons seem the obvious choice in the oak woodland.
The embellishment thus added is regarded as ‘painting' the landscape. The gardener not only needs new situations for his ever-increasing acquisitions, but feels the desire to add colour to a view. The most usual idea of this sort is the planting of daffodils in grassy meadows and thin woodland; the larger colourful hybrids should be eschewed in brooms and gorse On arid limestone and favour of the smaller wild species together with the unsophisticated smaller hybrids, both new and old, to achieve a natural effect.
A third type of wild garden is made by taking an unadorned plot and creating a ‘natural landscape' of exotic plants and shrubs. It often degenerates into a hotch-potch of trees and shrubs growing in the rough grass - simply the overflow from the designed garden area around the house belonging to a keen plants- man. The influx of species and the creation of innumerable hybrids, coupled with the ease with which they can be grown in the right conditions with little labour has resulted in innumerable woodlands throughout the country being filled with colourful plants such as rhododendrons, rather than the woodland landscape being gently embellished with them.
In size a wild garden can be quite small or run to many acres. A grassy bank with a rough hedge behind can be given bulbs and species of roses, honey- suckles and a tree or two; a ditch or depression can be planted with moisture- loving irises, rodgersias and peltiphyllum if in sunshine, while shady banks will take ferns and hostas. The heath garden is a well-known style of wild gardening, where sheets of erica, calluna, vaccinium, gaultherias, mingle with burnet roses, tree lupins, chalk numerous Chinese species of shrubs and plants will thrive. In general the choice among bulbous plants should be confined to species (double daffodils, big florists' tulips, gross hybrid lilies, fancy-coloured hemerocallis are not suitable). Among herbaceous plants the choice should be confined to those which will make a dense clump, slowly increasing, or a dense mass of stems which may increase quickly by underground roots: examples of the former are hemerocallis and hosta; of the latter, Senecio tanguticus and Macleaya microcarpa; they should also be plants which will stand erect without staking.
Turning to shrubs, here again species are preferable; the choice should avoid gawky awkward growers, and concentrate on those which cover the ground densely, such as Viburnum tomentosum and Cotoneaster conspicua, or which grow aloft gracefully, allowing light and air to something growing beneath them, such as Magnolia wilsonii. A stalky prickly shrub will prove an awkward plant when a nettle or bellbind settles itself among the roots.
