Algebra question. It's been awhile i can set it up but forgot how to solve?
Amy drove the 200 miles to New Orleans at an average speed 10 miles per hour faster than her usual average speed. If she completed the trip in 1 hour less than usual, what is her usual driving speed in miles per hour. I GOT THIS FAR
200/r+10=200/r -1 (the 1 is not in the denominator)
Man, this one took me a bit to get.
So first step is to get the second half of the equation in common denominator.
200/(r+10)=(200/r)- (r/r) as anything divided by itself is one.
then get the second half into a single unit
200/(r+10)=(200-r)/r
Then cross multiply.
200r=(r+10)*(200-r)
Then use foil to multiply out the second half.
200r= 200r -r^2 -10r +2000
Simplify
200r = 190r -r^2 +2000
Put into proper quadratic equation form.
r^2 +10r - 2000 = 0
Then use the quadratic equation to solve.
x =( -b +- sq root(4ac))/2a
a=1 (r^2 coeff.) b= 10 (r coeff) c= -2000
x=(-10 +- sq root(4*1*-2000))/2*1
x= (-10 +- sq root (8100))/2
x= (-10 +- 90)/2
x= 80/2=40 or x= -100/2= -50
Since r stands for rate which will be positive, the answer is 40.
This checks out. 200 miles at 40 miles per hour (her usual) is a 5 hour trip. However at 10 mph faster, 50, the trip takes 4 hours.
Great job on setting up that equation. That would have been the harder part for me!!! Hope this helps!
