Open my own dojo??
I have trained for a number of years in both wado karate and BJJ. I am a 2nd Dan in Wado and a purple belt in BJJ. I would like to open my own dojo to cross train in my own martial art taking advantage of the striking from karate and grappling from BJJ. How do I go about it legally, making sure I am insured properly?
Thanks for the comments so far, I think I may have come across in the wrong way. I am not looking to create my own style. I live in surrey and there are no real opportunities to get into mma. I would be looking to cross train both martial arts and look to train other fighters with the view to move in to mma.
Well if you are going to open your OWN style and school and not go under the banner of your former schools then you CAN do that.
All you have to do is get a business license and state license. Talk to an insurance company to have insurance and a place and equipment to operate it.
If you have never operated a business before then you should consider either taking some classes or hiring a consultant so you succeed. It is one thing to have people come over and train in your garage, but if you want to have an official recognized school then you would have to do this or no one will consider your or your students legitimate.
Even though you are starting your own style and once successful will make you a Soke and 5th degree. This generally takes the approval of a board of Masters that are willing to recognize your system and art. Once they do then you have your legitimacy. I would also suggest you keep some respect to your former teachers and teach your students your past and lineage so they can pass it on to their students one day.
So get a Federal and State business License and also get your Insurance, equipment, location and market it!! This means paper adds, flyers, business cards, website, brochure and more as you grow. You have to let people know you are out there and where to find you. A phone number and e-mail is always good to have for them to contact you.
So after you do all that and operate it say for five or so years and produce your first black belts you can approach several Masters and ask for recognition of your style, and if you get enough Masters and Grandmasters to recognize you then you r style will become legitimate in name.
