what are the most valuable baseball, football, and hockey cards of the 70's and 80's?
Or even in the most recent decade or two.
I can't answer for anything recent, after the early 1990s, when the market was flooded with cards. I specialize in pre-1970 now, but am knowledeable about cards until 1993 or so. What I am going to say pertains only to pre- 90s, because today there are so many different inserts and 'special' cards with little pieces of bats and uniforms that it's impossible to keep track of them. Some are dirt cheap and some go for huge amounts of money, but to me, it's all bogus. It's artificial scarcity, created by companies to get you to buy their crap. What used to make a card desirable and valuable were the players themselves, because there used to be only one card per player per set per year, instead of dozens and dozens.
The most valuable cards are usually rookie cards, the first cards of players in a regular-issue set. For the period you're asking about, Topps was the only game in town until the early 1980s. Once Fleer and Donruss got into the picture, it was common for there to be 2 or 3 rookie cards for each player and the card values varied depending on the set. For example, Cal Ripken's 1982 Topps rookie has always been worth more than his Fleer and Donruss counterparts, which both go for about the same price.. But, Don Mattingly's 1984 Donruss rookie is by far the best to own, with Fleer worth about half and Topps even lesser.
The three companies also issued update or 'traded' sets, and sometimes, a players first cardboard appearance was in one these sets. The hobby calls them XRCs, or extended rookie cards, not true rookie cards, because they weren't in the regular issue. But I will include them, because some are worth more than the true rookie.
The most valuable card from the 1980s is Cal Ripken's 1982 Topps traded card. The most valuable card from the 1970s is Nolan Ryan's 1970 Topps card, with Thurman Munson's rookie from the same set and Mike Schmidt's 1973 Topps close seconds.
The most valuable football card from the 1980s is Joe Montana's 1981 Topps RC. For the 1970s. Terry Bradshaw 1971 and Roger Staubach 1972 are worth pretty close to the same.
The best hockey card of the 1970s is Watne Gretzky's 1979-80 O Pee Chee RC, with his Topps rookie worth about a third to half as much. The best card of the 1980s is Mario Lemieux's 1985-86 O Pee Chee. Patrick Roy's 1986-87 OPC is worth more then Lemieux's Topps rookie.
The Canadian O Pee Chee cards are harder to find, not as many were made until 1989.
