Anybody else think that the current version of NFL pro football is watered down?
I first became a fan of NFL football in the late 1970s. And in my opinion, since the early 1990s when players were allowed free agency, and the salary cap was also introduced, they quality of pro football has gone way down.
I believe that some of the wild-card teams from the 80s could beat some of the teams who've won the Super Bowl since the advent of free agency and the salary cap.

BINGO! i couldnt agree more! when the cowboys of the 90's and niners were warring every year, man you saw some quality football. and the 90's, for reasons you already hit on, were the last of what i call, the dynasty days. along came true parity, and with it the chance for a team to turn it's fortunes around in one season; BUT the overall quality of play suffered.
in my op, more sophisticated rules havent helped either. there are just too many penalties. and with the re-play challenges, and TV timeouts, some games are almost, (well they are), unwatchable.
but with respect to free agency and parity, the new england patriots are to be admired all the more for what they have accomplished as year in and year out they maintain a level of excellence the rest of the league must truely marvel at.
